Within the framework of various swap arrangements, the SNB can, where necessary, provide liquidity in foreign currencies, thus serving as a liquidity backstop. While such precautionary measures have no effect on the supply of money in Swiss francs, they enable the SNB’s counterparties to gain easier access to liquidity in foreign currencies.
